Brachiopod Fossils

Bachiopods (phylum Bachiopoda) are hard shelled marine animals that first appeared during the early Cambrian period, around 550 million years ago. They look similar to bivalves, but bivalves are part of the mollusc phylum, whereas bachiopods are their own phylum and unrelated to molluscs. Although bachiopods are rare today, back in the Palaeozoic era they were extremely common and widely dispersed throughout the world. For more information, click here.
