*JAW BONE* Cave Bear Mandible from Romania, 8" 20cm

  • $ 700.00

Cave Bear (Ursus splelaeus) jaws with teeth intact are not commonly found, especially in this beautiful condition. There are a few minor repairs, mainly to stabilise the teeth and the mandible seems to coated with a protective coating. The canine and a couple of molars are still intact (which is hard to find), but a few other teeth are missing. Overall, this is a rare and unique specimen for a serious collector looking for an exotic piece for their collection.

The detail of the actual bone is superb and you can even feel the fine ridges and bumps. We guarantee this fossil is genuine and has had no major repairs or reconstruction.

Ursus spelaeus (also known as the Cave Bear) is an extinct species of bear that lived during the Last Glacial Maximum, 24,000 to 27,000 years ago. Most fossils of this species were found in caves, suggesting that they spent more of their time in caves than modern bears. Males weighed 400 to 500 kilograms whereas females were half that size, weighing around 225 to 250 kilograms. Their diet consisted mostly of plants though recent studies have found that they occasionally consumed meat.
