Mosasaur Tooth in Matrix (Prognathodon solvayi?)

  • $ 220.00

For sale is a beautiful Prognathodon tooth embedded in phosphate matrix. This specimen is 100% natural and is not a composite. It was excavated from the phosphate quarries of the Ouled Abdoun Basin in Morocco, so the matrix is fragile. Nothing has been done to it, except for some dirt being brushed off the tooth. Fossils like these are not easy to come by as many mosasaur teeth in matrix are composites and were put there artificially. Unfortunately, the root is not intact.

Most Prognathodon tooth fossils found in this area are of the Prognathodon anceps species, but the facets of the enamel are longitudinal. This morphology resembles that of Prognathodon solvayi not anceps. However, this species, Prognathodon solvayi, has not been officially described in Morocco, thus we must label this tooth as Prognathodon indet.

This is a stunning specimen, and would make a worthy collection for an intermediate to advanced collector looking for a rare piece. It is fragile and needs to be handled with care.
